AUSTIN, TX – Nov.5, 2008 – Motion Computing®, a leader in mobile computing and wireless communications, announced today that Springfield Clinic, a large multi-specialty physician clinic in Springfield, Illinois, successfully implemented its C5 Mobile Clinical Assistant (MCA) and LE1700 Tablet PCs with the Allscripts Enterprise™ Electronic Health Record (EHR). The solution was deployed to 230 providers, several hundred nurses and ancillary staff with positive responses from both caregivers and patients.
Springfield Clinic provides care in more than 30 different specialties, and with over 800,000 annual patient encounters that generate more than one million transcription notes and 500,000 prescriptions each year, administrators knew that an EHR was necessary to manage growth, lower costs and ensure that providers had instant access to patient information anytime and anywhere. Following a review of numerous vendors, the clinic selected the Web-based Allscripts solution. Additionally, administrators needed a mobile computing solution to support its EHR program, and after evaluating several different types of devices, including desktop PCs, laptops, tablets and ultra-mobile devices, the clinic selected Motion® LE1700 Tablet PCs and C5 MCAs.
Allscripts Enterprise Health Record replaces paper recordkeeping by automating everyday clinical tasks such as prescribing medications, ordering and viewing laboratory tests and documenting patient care in real time. The solution also connects physicians electronically to laboratories, pharmacies, insurers and other key healthcare stakeholders. In combination with the Motion Tablet PCs, Allscripts Enterprise Health Record provides instant access to the information needed to enhance the quality of care throughout the clinic, while also lowering its cost.
“The Motion devices are unique because they easily fit into clinician workflows, enhancing the patient-provider relationship by allowing the caregiver to review patient history, charting, medications and chief complaints while at the point of care, without the need to leave the patient or turn their back to use a traditional desktop PC,” said James Hewitt, Administrator and Chief Information Officer of Springfield Clinic. “Our caregivers report that the slate-style design and portability ease have made the devices an essential component of their daily workflows.”
Clinic physicians are 100 percent compliant with EHR use. Hewitt believes part of the credit for that milestone is the flexibility of the Allscripts solution and the tablet’s all-in-one design. “The physicians are able to use the system in the way that works for them,” added Hewitt. “If they want to type they can type, if they want to dictate they can dictate and they are able to use the device for each entire patient encounter.”
The successful technology deployment results from ongoing collaboration between Springfield Clinic, Allscripts, Intel and Motion. Motion’s wireless engineers worked closely with Springfield Clinic’s infrastructure teams to ensure that the wireless network would meet the demands of mobile devices, such as wireless VoIP phones, tablet PCs, and Wi-Fi enabled PDAs. Additionally, on-the-job, in-service training was provided to help clinicians become comfortable with and confident using the tablet PCs with the EHR.
Some of the improvements of the EHR and Motion Tablet PC deployment realized by Springfield Clinic include:
“Motion has worked closely with Springfield Clinic to ensure that using Motion Tablet PCs complements rather than disrupts their workflows,” said Joel French, Motion Computing Vice President and General Manager of its Healthcare Business Group. “We are pleased to see that deployment has not only met, but exceeded initial program expectations.”
When Springfield Clinic completes their full EHR implementation early in 2009, they will employ approximately 800 tablets and almost 1,000 docking stations.
