About Motion Computing

Motion Computing was one of the most popular developers of the most popular developers of slate Tablet PC computers. The company was located in Austin, Texas until it was purchased by another major company in the field. However, by that time Motion Computing made a great impact on the market and they focused on vertical markets such as healthcare government, public safety, and construction. Furthermore, Motion Computing was the first company which introduced the Gorilla Glass, as well as Bonded displays, built-in array microphones, and also UV light-based disinfection stations meant for clinical environments.

History

The company was founded in 2001 by former executives in Dell, including David Altounian and Scott Eckert, who was the CEO of Motion Computing. In 2002, this company launched its first product which was a tablet under the name Motion M1200. It was a successor of pen slates from the 90s. Besides, the M1200 became the first slate tablet on the market with a 12-inch size.

In the same year, Motion raised $6.5 million. Their second funding round was in 2003 when they raised $11.2 million followed by $25 million in the 2004 Series C round. In 2003, the company presented the M1300, becoming the first 1 Ghz tablet with Intel Centrino mobile technology. The M1400 upon its release in 2004, became the first 12-inch slate tablet with a View Anywhere display.

With the help of its independent software seller collaboration program, Motion made a strong connection with companies such as Active Ink, Mi-Co and some gaming/gambling software developing studios with main focus to provide platforms for online bingo companies, which are running different casino promotions available to claim today. This resulted in improvements and development of tablet in the field of applications. Therefore, in 2007, the company released the first mobile clinical assistant – MCA at UCSF Medical Center.

In 2008, in a Series D funding round Motion raised $6 million, while the year later it secured $5.6 million. During the same year, Motion Computing announced that the C5 and F5 tablets would use Corning’s Gorilla Glass and that way become the first rugged tablet PCs with to do so.

In early 2011, the company introduced ReadyDock, for the C5 tablet which is the first chemical-free disinfection station that uses UV technology. In the same year, Motion announced the CL900 powered by Intel Atom “Oak Trail” and running Windows 7. The CL900 was also fully rugged 10″ screen ultra-light Tablet PC which weighed 2.1 pounds. The next year the CL910 tablet was presented. It was followed by the CL920 in October 2014.

However, in April 2015, the company was obtained by Xplore Technologies Corp. for $16 million. At that time, Motion Computing was a second-leading provider of rugged tablet PCs in the world.
